Abalone dive, August 16-18

On August 16-18, Alacosta divers camped at Van Damme state park. Many divers planned on abalone diving. Jim Kirby and Michael Daily captured abalone from their kayaks. Jeff Lewis and Matt Olson used their abalone floats. On Saturday, Matt, Jeff, and Kevin Dalley, along with scuba tanks, took Pépé, Alacosta's new, small, Achilles, on its inaugural dive. After reaching the dive site, we discovered that the anchor bucket had an anchor chain, but did not have an anchor. The second trip to the dive included an anchor.

The visibility was 30 feet. The temperature was the usual balmy Van Damme $50^\circ$. There were many rockfish. The ling cod did not fare as well. It met its death at the end of the Jeff's spear gun, borrowed, from Jim.

Saturday dinner included many forms of abalone prepared by Michael Daily. The abalone ceviche was particularly good. Charlie and Marge Cleland added their culinary expertise, including home grown lemons used for the marinade for the barbecued abalone.
