Abalone limits reduced

California Fish and Game Commission reduced the abalone bag and season limit for 2002. The new limits are 3 abalone per day and 24 abalone per year. The commission took a compromise position from the CDFG biologist's recommended change to 2 per day and 30 per year. The biologists wanted a 50% reduction in the pressure on Sonoma and Mendocino counties' abalone resource (96% of the annual state landings now come from those two counties). The 2/30 option yielded a 49% decrease. A 3/30 option was closer to 40%. The 3/24 pretty much splits that difference.
