On 24 January 2001, the members of the Committee on Names of Fishes of the American Fisheries Society and the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (AFS/ASIH), unanimously agreed to recommend changing the English common name for Epinephelus itajara (Lichtenstein, 1822) from jewfish to goliath grouper. The new name will be adopted in the next edition of the AFS publication Common and Scientific Names of Fishes from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The committee recommends immediate adoption by all users. While the committee did not find evidence that the name jewfish was used offensively, it was deemed to be considered offensive to many individuals. Some sources suggest that the former jewfish was mythological fish which swallowed Jonah, but the history of the name jewfish is not clear.
The Blurb was unable to determine whether jewfish eat Mormon crickets.
