The Contra Costa Times reports that white abalone may be near extinction. The National Marine Fisheries Service recently considered listing the white abalone as an endangered species. It would be the first marine invertebrate to receive this listing. The California State Fish and Game Department is considering listing white abalone under California's Endangered Species Act.
