Upcoming dives

Talk to the dive chairs early. Please sign up in advance. All people who sign up are responsible for fees at the dive. People who don't sign up for the dive may be excluded from the dive and shunned for life. On camping trips, each diver is responsible for finding its own campsites. The chair will attempt to organize campsites, but no guarantees can be made. There is a $5 per day fee for use of the club boats.

Point Lobos, August 19th

Susan Carter is chairing a dive to Point Lobos on Saturday, August 19th. The plan is to take inflatables for a day trip, and, conditions permitting, launch them for a dive or dives over at Bluefish Cove. This will be a great chance to do a final, post-boat party check out of the inflatables before our Catalina trip, and a great chance to get in some good dives!

Reservations are necessary to dive at Pt. Lobos. Pt. Lobos has sold out all of their reservations for August 19. Talk to Susan to determine whether there is space for you. For information on Pt. Lobos, see

Channel Islands Vision trip

Vicki and John Beland signed up for a 4-day southern Channel Islands Vision trip. Here are the details:

Date:
August 20-23
Destination:
Southern Channel Islands (weather permitting)
Cost:
$620 for four days (Sounds like a lot, but it's only $155/day, including food, lodging, and all the diving you can handle)
Payload:
Limited--26 divers maximum

A 25% deposit is required to hold your space. Reserve a bunk at the same time

The trip is run by Truth Aquatics. There will be no dive shops, marine biologists, etc.

Catalina money is due August 7

The date for the annual Emerald Bay Catalina trip is September 9-16, which starts the Saturday after Labor Day. There will be about 60-70 children between the 11th and the 15th. Susan Carter and Rocky Rockafellow are chairing the dive.

Total trip cost for the week, including diving off of the club inflatables, accommodations, all meals and transportation to and from Los Angeles to Catalina island is estimated to be $550. Non-members can sign up, but will be charged an additional fee that is the equivalent of an individual membership. Also, members have priority in event the trip fills up, so all divers interested in coming with us to Catalina are encouraged to join the club!

The intrepid Alacostans are heading off to Catalina for our traditional week, September 9th through 16th at Emerald Bay. If you are planning to go and haven't yet sent in your deposit, please mail it to Treasurer Carolyn Oltman .

And if you are not sure whether to go, join us! Catalina is one of the club's best trips, offering lots of great diving at a price that can't be beat, along with plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and the traditional Alacostan post-dive favorites drinking, eating and sleeping! Don't let the Blurb's previous description of 50 to 60 kids in camp for a few days fool or discourage you: this is a peaceful quiet and fun trip and a chance at world class diving right in our own backyard!

If you are coming to Catalina, you will probably want to book a hotel reservation for the night of Friday, September 8th, as the boat leaves early on Saturday the 9th. We will be back in LA by 1 PM at the latest on the 16th, leaving plenty of time to drive home and back to reality that same day. More information on some relatively reasonable possibilities in Marina Del Rey will be available at the August meeting, along with a list of suggested items to bring along.

Any questions in the meantime, call or email the Catalina co-chairs, Susan Carter or Rocky Rockafellow.

See you there!

Van Damme

John Beland is leading an abalone trip at Van Damme on November 24-26, Friday-Sunday. Call him for details.

Cozumel in May, 2001

Bernie Cappelli has scheduled a Cozumel trip for May 5-12, 2001, at Scuba Club.

Marilyn Johnson, a scuba travel agent we have often used, has a quote below. Note that her quote does not reflect any discounts. If we can get 11 rooms the rate could be as low as $607 + tax and air.

Please send your deposits directly to Inter Ocean Tours 510-638-3448 via credit card or check.

Call either Bernie or Marilyn with any questions.

Marilyn Johnson has reserved 11 rooms at Scuba Club for May 5-12, 2001. We receive one free room with 10 paid rooms. Marilyn hopes that we could get 2 free spots and reduce the cost. $1100 is due by April 22, 2000 to hold these rooms and get this years rates. Diver double is $750, diver single is $978, Diver triple is $696. Non diver double is $658. These rates do not include 12% tax or 10% club discount. You would also get a further discount by dividing 1 free with 10 paid.

Package includes:

Collect $100 deposit per person or have everyone send direct to us. I have requested airfare from Continental; but may not get a fare quote until 11 months out. The airline will want $40 per seat deposit later.
