New dives

Talk to the dive chairs early. Please sign up in advance. All people who sign up are responsible for fees at the dive. People who don't sign up for the dive may be excluded from the dive and shunned for life. On camping trips, each diver is responsible for finding its own campsites. The chair will attempt to organize campsites, but no guarantees can be made.

Vision trip

Tom Southworth of Alameda College will have his annual Channel Islands dive trip on July 7-9, Sunday-Tuesday. While this trip is full, people on the waiting list may still be able to get a spot. For more information call Marilyn Johnson of Inter-Ocean Tours. Class credit included.

Van Damme trip, August 16-18

Kevin Dalley will lead a trip to Van Damme on August 16-18, Friday-Saturday. Call Mistix for reservations starting June 21 (800-444-PARK). Campsites disappear soon. For more information, call Kevin Dalley.

Catalina trip, Sept 7-14

The July 1 general meeting at the Orinda library is signup time for non-club members. A $75 deposit is required to be on the trip. If you cannot attend this meeting, send deposits to the treasurer:
Diane Keane
Make the deposit check payable to ``Alacosta Divers''.

Club boats and Transportation
Alacosta needs boat haulers

Presently, Bernie Cappelli and Ed Joslyn have each agreed to transport a complete boat. Dick Pierce who was to have a boat, has dropped out of the trip; he is going to dive off of Turkey. So, interested people who could take either a whole or part of a boat should call Jack Cash. Please call before the July 15th Executive Board meeting. If we do not get enough people to haul boats, we will have to fall back to the U-Haul Truck rental plan. This would increase the cost of the trip an estimated $17.

Catalina deadline

The deadline for the Catalina trip signup is the general meeting on August 5th.

Cost

The trip cost is expected to be between $285 and $315.

Fiji-Beqa lagoon, Marlin Bay Resort
Tom and Cindy Casey

In 1992, we will be leading another adventure, to Fiji. The location is the famous Beqa Lagoon (pronounced ben-gah). Until recently, you stayed on Viti Levu and boated to Beqa. Now there is an American owned (co-owner from Martinez!) operation called Marlin Bay Resort. The resort is managed by the former captain (6 years +) of the Cuan Law (whom we met on our Cuan Law trip.

Beqa Lagoon is 300 sq. kilometers with 68 kilometers of unbroken barrier reef. Skin Diver in their June '91 issue (page 200) has a great write up on Beqa, but doesn't mention Marlin Bay--it doesn't open until August or September '91. Beqa Lagoon is actually the ring of a volcano crater rising from a depth of 5000 feet. Beqa is surrounded by deep clear ocean water. The diving is world class and staying on Beqa assures easy access every day.

The date is sometime between February and June 1992 and the costs are still being worked out. Please call Tom and Cindy Casey for further information.
